New! An audio talk-through of the plot

Listen to me ramble about what happens in chapters 2-5 of The Age of Innocence

Hi all,

Surprise! I’ve started creating audio accompaniments for our weekly guides.

I’m really hoping to make our reading guides even better and more engaging — and one request I’d received quite a number of times was for an audio version of the guide or a friendly chat-through of the basic plot and novel happenings.

I am *not* an audio expert or podcaster or anything like that. There’s no introductory music or good editing. It’s just me and an old mic from my online teaching days. So, apologies in advance for any blurps or jumps, or that weird moment around 2:17 where there’s an awkward silent gap in the audio. I’ll get better at this, right?!

This week’s talk-through covers chapters 2-5 in detail, (about ten minutes per chapter) with frequent callbacks to what we learned in chapter 1. (Should I go back and make an audio version for chapter 1? I feel like I should…)

If you haven’t completed the reading for this week yet, finish it before you listen — or be mindful that I discuss each chapter for this week in detail, so you will run into spoilers if you listen before reading.

Think of this as a complement or supplement to the official reading guide, which comes out on Wednesday.

While I don’t think closely reading quite lends itself to audio (I like all the nice visuals of seeing the words on the page and how they relate to one another), I did think it might be fun to just record myself talking about what happened in the chapters we read for this week.

It’s plot-summary-meets-analytical-observations about the happenings of the plot. I also throw in a few references to the academic conversation about Wharton and historical tidbits.

Check it out! & let me know what you think? Anything you’d like to hear in next week’s audio? I’m very self conscious about my voice but it sure was fun to ramble about the novel for a while!

Cheers!
