I'm in! Unclear if I should put this question in the form... maybe I'll do that later... but do you recommend against following along with an audio version? If audio is encouraged, is there a version you recommend? Sometimes I read more closely with my ears! Either way I enjoy having both versions for busy days.
I'm just finishing up a Lord of the Rings read-a-long through another Substack, so this is perfect timing to start a new one! I read The Age of Innocence in high school but I know my teenage brain did not fully appreciate (or comprehend) the novel, so I'm excited to give it another go.
It's a stunning film! I actually saw the film before I read the novel and find a gorgeous conversation to be had between the two versions. I think whether you watch it before or after, it's sure to enlighten your reading!
I missed House of Mirth but would love to join this as haven’t read it in years, so will give it a go alongside the Wolf Hall year-long read. I’ll be flitting from the Tudors to the US so let’s see how that one works out!
I'm a new subscriber, and just wanted to say I'm so looking forward to this slow-read with you and everyone! I'm sad/jealous I missed The House of Mirth slow read! Please tell me you'll hit another Wharton after Age of Innocence? :)
My friend asked me to do Wharton's ghost stories this fall...so that may be our next Wharton read-a-long. We'll see! I'm also more than overdue for a re-read of The Custom of the Country.
Also: The Mirth reading guides are still available, so feel free to take it at your own pace and use the chapter guides to shape your reading experience! :)
Love it, cannot wait!! I’m so glad you’re doing another! I was interested that someone asked about listening to the audio book— for your House of Mirth read-along, I was reading on my kindle and wished I was reading a physical copy instead. I feel like your methods of closely reading, looking for themes, language patterns, favorite sentences, etc. is much more conducive to hard copy reading and alllll the annotations.
And on the notes: Ah, that's an amazing call-out, Dana!! Yes. Most people who do the read-a-long like to have some kind of analog method for note taking, whether they read/listen digitally and take notes in a notebook, or take notes right in a hardcopy of the book.
Not sure I'm going to have time to join, but so interested! There are so many great read-alongs and close readings here on Substack; if I tried to do them all, I'd have to quit my job (although that doesn't sound like such a bad idea)!

Hi Tara -- an excellent question! Audio is a perfect way to read this book. I don't have any recs, but this one looks pretty good: https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Age-of-Innocence-Audiobook/B002VAEHLK
You'll be able to follow along with the assigned chapters each week no matter the version you're in!

yay! so excited for this. will be watching the movie asap in preparation!!
Amazing! The film is *phenomenal* and I will love to know the differences you mark between the novel and the adaptation.
The movie looks great. I don't know how I've missed it. But I want to read the book first now.

Amazing! I imagine there will be some veryyyy interesting overlaps between those two worlds....
I've never read any Edith Wharton, I'm curious to join in if it's okay.
Absolutely!! Please join in! The Age of Innocence will be a perfect introduction to Wharton's fiction.

Just visiting booktown Hay on Wye today and have picked up a paperback copy so that I can join in. Looking forward to it!
Amazing! Welcome, welcome!
My bio literally says “chasing the high of a college lit course” so things have come full circle for me 🥹
