I like the mirror tip! I wonder what I'll find when I closely read myself? Revel in your cocoon, Haley. Imagine your cocoon enveloped in another cocoon of the love and appreciation you inspire!

my most favorite thing about substack is the quality we get because people have the freedom to lay on the floor for a while and come back to bring only the butterflies and not just the goo. the hardest lesson i have to learn repeatedly is not to just put something out to put something out - cheers to cocooning!

Hahahaha wait, this is SO TRUE. Even though I do kinda love when people put out the messy, in-process stuff. I really like that we can do whatever suits us here, like you said. So much freedom!!!!! And no punishing algorithm for our absence unlike *cough* Bookstagram *cough.*

Mostly, I need a break from this habit I've developed, in my busy brain, to make everything I read or think about "essay ready." I need to let some of this stuff marinate for a while! Excited to see what turns out.

Haley, you are doing exactly the right thing by “sitting in the mess a bit” by yourself. I do that on occasion and often find myself more fired up creatively than ever. Improbably, I’m in one of those fired-up phases now, after being laid up with a back problem that I thought would force me to take time off. It has in some key ways, but not in others, and sometimes you just need to trust where your ideas take you.

All of which is to say that I still intend to respond to your last post about *The Age of Innocence* - but I’ve been riding my own creative waves this week. Take care 😉
