Haley, as you know, I started annotating in my books this year, primarily due to your influence, so I'm looking forward to your additional thoughts on how and what to write. Specifically, I'd like to know what to do when rereading a book I have already annotated.
This year, one of my Substack book clubs is reading Mansfield Park, which I read with a different group last year. I'm sure there will be new information and insights in the "new" reading, but I've already color-coded themes from the "old" reading in my copy, and given how much crossover there may be between my groups (I'm already seeing it with Austen, Shakespeare, and C.S. Lewis), I certainly don't want to buy a new copy every time. I do keep a reading journal every year, so I could just write my new notes in this year's journal, but I really like having everything about a book together in one place.
Oooh these are amazing ideas, Deborah! Thank you—we’ll definitely explore these during Pride & Prejudice since I imagine many folks have a well-loved copy of the novel and want to annotate it well!
What a great year Haley! Congratulations on all the newsletter work & walking through such a challenge surgery and coming out the side with newfound creativity and excitement. Here’s to that spark continuing to burn bright in 2025!
Oh Haley, I had no idea of your surgery and recovery in 2024! And all the while you led us through all those incredible books!
I’ve started finding ways to annotate in books in a way I’m comfortable with. I’m so looking forward to 2025 to read with you and the fellow amazing substackers. But do take care: you should come first and foremost to yourself.
