I'm definitely in the mood to read some autumn books! And when you mentioned my favorite cartoon Over the garden wall: I watch it several times a year (luckily, it's short), and sometimes I read the comics too. They have more stories. There's so much other interesting stuff, I'm going to dive deeper into it now! And I'll choose what to read with you!
Yay! Excited to have you read along, Dana! Also: Over the Garden Wall is SO GOOD. And the theme song is so perfect for rainy, fall days. I can't wait to watch it again!!
Excited to dive into these autumnal picks! Especially love your inclusion of so many short stories and articles so it's easy to keep up. And I've never heard of "Over the Garden Wall" but it sounds adorable.
Yes! I wanted to break-up the longer reads with some short pieces that'll help the pace feel right. Like a little palate cleanser between each of the main courses. ;)
Oooh! This is just so yummy. Definitely committing to reading Passing and some Shirley Jackson later. Most likely will join on a lot more but trying not to overcommit. Saving this post as reference!
I am so excited for Fall! Best season for reading, in my opinion! 🤓📚🍁🍂🍂
I'm not much for creepy stories after having been traumatized as a young teen watching Hitchcock's "Psycho" (I still check the shower when I stay alone in a hotel!). As for stories, "Picnic at Hanging Rock" and "The Yellow Wallpaper" haunt me still. But as a reader, the creepiest ever story is the Twilight Zone episode "Time Enough at Last". I can't really believe how much I identified with that poor character. So, I'm skittish but will play along a bit. Great list. You've been busy.
Okay: I am like 30 pages into "Picnic" and it's SO GOOD. I put it down but I need to pick it back up. It had the most intense, suspenseful energy. And I loooooove the Yellow Wall-paper.
I've never seen "Time Enough at Last" (or much of the Twilight Zone). Maybe I need to look it up...
Sometimes the internet is amazing. I did a little exploring and you can stream the episode, but I also found the short story on which it was based. It's by Lynn Venable and was originally published in the January 1953 issue of If: Worlds of Science Fiction. I'd watch the episode first.
I love Passing!!! My podcast cohost and I spent several episodes (and many hours) breaking it down. It’s such a good book! It’s a shame Larsen stopped writing after 2 books.
Ooh! I need to check out your pod! Can’t wait to listen. I also wish Larsen had written more — both *Passing* and *Quicksand* are so beautiful and such brilliant character studies. I wish we had more novels from her to read!! I haven’t read her short stories yet, but I have a collection of them in my bookshop cart…
I need to read Quicksand which I have in a bindup of classics from the Harlem Renaissance. I didn’t know there were short stories too! Off to find them on bookshop
Sad I missed the Passing read-a-long but excited to catch up! I've had We Have Always Live in the Castle on my shelf for awhile so this is my nudge to get to it. I also read the Sentence which felt very autumnal even though it takes place all year round, books about bookstores just feel right this season
I know I'm ahead by a week (because I'm reading it with another group, too), but I can’t wait to see your close reading of The Haunting of Hill House. I've finished 4 chapters so far, and I have an impression that, as far as I can tell from some quick Google research, no one else seems to have addressed. We need to talk!!!

Haha I love thinking of this list as yummy — like a big London Fog latte! (Or whatever may be your fall drink of choice!)
VERY excited to read Passing with you! I think it's right up your alley.
I’ve got a lot of spooky stories in my future!
Yeah you do!! :)

See if you can find just that one classic episode and you'll see what I mean.

Ooooh cool!! Okay. Now I have some homework too!
I love to watch The Others in October. It’s my favorite!
Isn't it fantastic?! Nicole Kidman is too good at playing "waifish and weak but still somehow the scariest person on the screen"
This all sounds so intriguing.....thanks for sharing your love of great stories!
Thank you!! :)
So many fun reads and re-reads here Can’t wait for Shirley Jackson and Wharton!!
This is so detailed, it's incredible how much content you're gifting us in one go. Can't wait to dive in. Thank you!!
James and Wharton and Jackson and du Maurier - ❤️ ❤️ ❤️.
I love Wide Sargasso Sea so I'll have to take a look at After Leaving Mr. Mackenzie.
Spectacular list!

We talked about Passing waaaay back in the beginning of our podcast. It’s probably I little rough now but here’s the playlist if you want to hear us gush for a hours 😂 https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF9gvgfBWSS5UK3jAVpsLaadw0JEj1aYS&si=Pgatxb_nd0qsAww7
