Happy Valentine’s Day! For my favorite holiday, I am sharing favorite works of poetry — along with some lines that have stuck with me through the years.
Poetry was one of the first places I really learned to hone my closely reading skills. By paying attention to every possible element on the page—caesuras and cantos, anapests and anaphoras, limericks and litanies, trochees and tercets—I have learned so much about the relationship between the ideas in our heads, the feelings in our hearts, and the little signals we mark on paper. For me, poetry is the most honest form of writing. In it, we experience the struggles of meaning and the ache of feelings bigger than linguistic structures allow.
