Silly? Maybe. But I have ruler love for this one (the textures side is really wonderful) ... as well as Blackwing pencils. I am super excited for this journey!
My tip for reading big books Is to do a little every day. 5 minutes if that's all you have. It's less intimidating and you can choose to carry on or stop after the 5 mins. I extended time as I went on. Last year I read War and Peace with Simon Haisell on Substack like this. 1 chapter a day. The chapters are short and I could do them while drinking morning coffee
I am trying to adapt your suggestions to my digital copy: actually finding out what I can do with my digital reader. I know I can bookmark, but that's about it.
Bookmarking is a great start! In past reading groups, folks have used a notebook to write notes and specific page numbers in while they read a digital version—maybe that’s an option here for you?? Could be a digital notebook or a paper one. Whatever works for you!!
I've been using an orange gel pen to annotate my books for the last 20+ years. It's the only thing I use this pen color for and my brain locks on to it now :)
I just bought my copy and I am so excited to join in! I finally started using a 6 inch ruler for my underlines and who knew something so simple would be such a game changer! I can't explain the pure joy those straight lines give me and how slowing down to underline with a ruler has helped me to savor the words more deeply! And I love using it as a bookmark too! Excited for Middlemarch, thank you for hosting!
I have Japaneses metal rulers in various colours, which have a clip that slides over the top of the page to act as a bookmark. I've ordered more stickers for this read. I took annotate in pencil. I've tried Blackwings of various types but most are too dark and smudge in books. I use a lot of German Faber Castell in F or Hb. I'm rereading this work as I last read it two years ago. It's like War and Peace Moby Dick, or Jane Austen's novels, you you can't read it too many times, it goes on giving you more, the more you read it.
I have just signed up for the Middlemarch readalong but chose the monthly sub instead of the yearly one. I can’t seem to be able to correct it to the right one, can you help me please and sorry for the mixup
This is the second time an opportunity like this is presenting itself to me and I’m not letting it slip away. Looking forward to reading along with everyone. Also, I love the ruler. 🥰
Can you explain what I will have access to as a free follower please? Our car has just been declared unfixable so funds are very stretched at the moment and I’m really looking forward to reading along with you all 😀
Hi! You will have access to *everything!* which is my favorite part of all of this. Paid subs get an extra post or two, with writing prompts or extra resources. But as a free sub, you will get every single weekly guide with all the analysis and reading questions to help you read deeply. You’ll also have access to comment so you can join the community conversation each week! 🥰

I love Blackwing pencils soooo much. You reminded me to get my box of them out of the craft cupboard.

Have the start date marked on my calendar!
Excited to read with you!
The book lies here beside me. I sense that it longs to be opened. I am so eager to make its acquaintance.
The meeting will be very stimulating and unpredictable! Who knows if we will like each other....
An adventure to be savored slowly!
Thank you Haley for this opportunity.
I love this: “who knows if we’ll like each other?” 🥹 I’m so excited to find out with you!
Fantastic, looking forward to this.
Can't wait!

Oh yes, a digital notebook, that's a marvellous idea. I have also found out that I can highlight in different colours. I am really excited now 😻

I bought a short ruler a couple months ago after seeing you mention it a couple times, and it really is a gamechanger!
This will be my second time through Middlemarch and I am SO excited.
It’s the best, isn’t it?!

Hi! I sure can. It’ll take me a few days—so please DM me if not fixed by the weekend 🥰
Thank you.

Hi Beatrice...good to see you here!
Thanks Kim. I received my new rulers, book and pens today. 😌
